‘Laver for Gimbap’carefully roasted with the best seaweed
The product that SCDD Co., Ltd gained K·FISH certification is ‘Suhyup Laver for Gimbap’, which was made by finding buyers and sharing product concepts, etc. with collaboration with National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives. In particular, laver for gimbap is characterized by high-quality seaweed’s savory flavor and soft texture in the mouth when chewing it. According to Mr. Kang, the quality of seaweed greatly depends on changes in ocean currents and subtle temperature even in winter, so during the laver harvest season, the company in principle purchases only premium seaweed while going around the representative production areas including the southern sea and the western sea, keeps it fresh in a cold storage and uses it. In addition, since seaweed which can be used varies depending on the usage of laver including gimbap, seasoning, snack, etc., the company uses ‘eyes to understand the characteristics of seaweed’ and proper temperature and speed to roast good seaweed, which can be said as SCDD’s own know-how and technical skill.
“Recently, our main exporting countries such as Russia or Thailand, etc. are increasingly looking for laver for gimbap. At the point of getting K·FISH certification, buyers asked for us to obtain K·FISH certification, so we immediately got certification for laver for gimbap. It seems that thanks to continuous K·FISH promotion by Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, we have been increasingly recognized by buyers.”

Laver Business that began with an accident, Turning Crisis into Opportunity
Around in 2009, when the representative Byeongsoo Kang who worked in other industry was about to change a job, he visited Thailand for a trip and jumped into the laver-related business right after checking the market competitiveness of laver snacks. He said that he thought there was any possibility because he was born and raised in Gunsan-si, Jeollabuk-do, and frequently encountered laver from childhood and he had an acquaintance who conducted the laver manufacturing business. He started the import and distribution of seaweed by establishing a trading corporation in Thailand with the help of acquaintances and 2 years later, in 2011, he established SCDD Co., Ltd in South Korea and directly engaged in laver processing. And then, while forming TMK, the corporation for manufacturing and distributing laver snacks, in Thailand, he built the firm manufacturing and export system with the capacity to produce laver products in various types both in South Korea and Thailand.
He said that the company started like a coincidence and has grown up relatively quickly, but it has overcome lots of adversities and hardships. From the 2011 great flood and the 2014 coup in Thailand to Pandemic caused by COVID-19 in 2019, despite lots of crises, he did not give up. Instead, he aggressively ran around on his own two feet to secure clients and turned crises into opportunities while responding swiftly to situations.
“I visited major companies and persuaded them to use our company as the OEM factory and when market conditions were getting harder, I gave up my salaries and tried to keep up credit with investors. I thought that during the pandemic, the decreasing number of people eat out, but the delivery market will survive and when the pandemic is over, the food market will revive first, so I set up a plan to complete a second factory in South Korea. At that time, everyone said it was crazy, but now, the pandemic has come to an end and I actively go abroad to meet buyers. I think it will be a chance to expand into a wider world.”
